Levels of eLearning courses

"There is a positive correlation between interactivity & learning outcomes"

Generally, interactive eLearning can increase knowledge retention by 20-60% or more compared to non-interactive or passive learning methods. GameX aims to engage more interactive & active learning methods to help learners learn better and retain more long term.

Low interactivity

Passive method *most common

In low-interactivity eLearning, learners primarily receive information without many opportunities to actively engage with the content. These types of courses are often more passive & lecture-based & 40% retained.

Features:

  • Text-heavy slides with little to no interaction.
  • Videos or audio lectures that present information without prompting active involvement
  • Simple multiple-choice or true/false assessments after content.
  • No or minimal feedback provided
  • Focuses on content delivery than active engagement

Medium interactivity

30% to 50% more retention

This level involves some interaction but is still somewhat passive. Learners might have opportunities to interact with the content, in a simple & somewhat engaging manner.

Features:

  • Some interactive elements, such as drag-and-drop exercises or clickable buttons to explore content.
  • Incorporation of multimedia, like videos with embedded questions or simulations.
  • Occasional quizzes or knowledge checks that provide feedback.
  • More opportunities for learners to apply knowledge in practical ways

High interactivity

60%+ more retention

High-interactivity eLearning is immersive and highly engaging, often requiring learners to take an active role, increasing learner involvement and retention.

Features:

  • Simulations, role-playing, or virtual environments where learners make decisions and see consequences.
  • Scenarios or branching content where learners actively participate and control their learning path.
  • Interactive assessment
  • quizzes, and games with immediate feedback.
  • Real-time collaboration, like discussions or peer reviews.

Grounded in instructional design principles

GameX aims to include more Level 3 and above learning outcomes on Bloom’s taxonomy.

Passive learning focuses on  Remembering (level 1) and Understanding (level 2), where learners absorb and process information in a more one-way fashion (e.g., reading, listening).

Active learning occurs at the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy Applying (level 3), Analyzing (level 4), Evaluating (leve 5) and Creating (level 6), where learners engage in more complex thinking, problem-solving, and application of knowledge.
